Zagreb: Top 12 Things to Do

While I’ve been to Croatia a couple of times, I have never been to Zagreb. So when I saw a cheap weekend flight I knew I had to take advantage of it. I honestly didn’t know much about what to do besides St. Mark’s Church, but once I started planning, I couldn’t stop saving places I wanted to visit and see.  I did my best to try and visit as much as I could and here are my top 12 attractions in Zagreb:

Top Things To Do:

1. Croatian National Theatre
Easily recognisable by its yellow colour, this Neo-Baroque building is located in Marshal Tito Square. This is a place where locals gather around to relax in the theatre’s park and its surroundings. If you have time makes sure to catch an opera or ballet here for a cultural experience.
2. Ban Jelačić Square
The main square is called Ban Jelačić Square and it’s the heart of Zagreb. This is the perfect spot to stop people watch and take in the city’s energy. The main attraction in the square is the statue of Count Josip Jelacic, a famous Croatian historical figure, mounted on horseback.

Fun fact: during the communist regime, the statue was removed and hidden, only to return proudly after Croatia’s independence!

While you are in the square make sure to keep an eye out for the Manduševac Fountain. It’s tradition for university graduates to jump in and celebrate their hard-earned degrees.
3. Funicular Downtown
From the square hop on the world’s shortest funicular to get to the Upper Town. The ride takes about 60 seconds and a one-way ticket costs just €0,80.
4. Lotrščak Tower
The tower is located next to where the funicular drops you off in the Upper Town. Make sure you get there just before noon—the daily cannon blast from Lotrščak Tower is a Zagreb tradition! It marks noon with a bang, and you’ll feel the city come alive with this loud, historical reminder. Just be aware that the bang is extremely loud so if you’re not comfortable with loud noises maybe skip this part.
5. Church of St Mark
The iconic Church of St. Mark is Zagreb’s most photographed landmark. You can’t miss its colourful tiled roof, depicting the coat of arms of Croatia. The interior has been closed since 2020 for renovation so if you find it open do not miss the chance to go inside.
6. Stone Gate
Walking around the Upper Town you can not miss the Stone Gate, one of the last remaining medieval city gates. Inside you will find a painting of the Virgin Mary, which survived a fire in the 17th century. Locals believe it to be miraculous, so you’ll often see people lighting candles and praying.
7. K Crnom Orlu - the oldest pharmacy
K Crnom Orlu is the oldest pharmacy in Zagreb. It was built in the 14th century and it still operates today! It’s located in the Upper City, just next to the Stone Gate. Peek inside to see the old wooden shelves lined with herbs and potions.
8. Tunel Gric
This hidden tunnel was built during WWII as a bomb shelter and evacuation route. Now it serves as a cool escape on hot days and often hosts art exhibitions or events.
9. Dolac Market
The Dolac Market is a large open-air market where you can find fresh fruits, vegetables and homemade goods. You can also find meat and dairy products on the lower level.

Tip: Be sure to visit before 1 PM as most stalls will be closed afterwards.
10. Museum of Hangovers
This quirky museum showcases hilarious (and occasionally painful) stories and artefacts related to—you guessed it—hangovers! This was such a fun stop on our itinerary and I’d really recommend it. Tickets cost €8,50 and you can even buy a drink at the entrance for a complete experience.
11. Mirogoj Cemetery
Designed by Hermann Bollé, its arcades, lush greenery, and grand tombstones make this cemetery feel more like an open-air museum. Stroll around and enjoy the tranquillity.

Entrance is free.
12. Try Strukli
One of my favourite dishes that I tried in Zagreb was Strukli. It’s a traditional Croatian dish made out of baked dough and cheese parcels. They come both in sweet and savoury varieties so you will probably try them more than once. La Štruk was my favourite place to eat this delicious dish as it has a cosy vibe and a beautiful small garden in the back.
