The Great Mosque of Kairouan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest mosques in the world. The Mosque is located in the historic city centre of Kairouan and is one of the most significant examples of Islamic architecture. Here’s how to experience this remarkable monument, and what to expect when you arrive.
How to get to The Great Mosque of Kairouan
The mosque is located in the centre of Kairouan in the Medina. Kairouan is located in the country’s centre, about 160 km (~100 mi) from Tunis. If you’re planning on travelling from Tunis, driving is the most straightforward option. The easiest way however would be to go from Sousse. From Sousse, you also have the option to take a local louage (a version of a minibus) which departs every 5-10 minutes once they are full (they can accommodate 10 people).
Alternatively you can also take a taxi from Sousse or a day trip to see The Great Mosque of Kairouan.
About The Great Mosque of Kairouan
The fortress-like appearance of the mosque gives it a sense of timeless strength. Built in the 7th century by Uqba ibn Nafi, the Great Mosque of Kairouan is a symbol of the Islamic empire’s early expansion into North Africa. The mosque served not only as a place of worship but also as a centre of education and a spiritual beacon for Muslims across the region.
One of the first thing that you will notice is the majestic minaret. It rises at 31-meter high and it’s the oldest standing minaret in the world. In its early days, it was used as a watchtower.
Inside, you’ll encounter the mosque’s grand prayer hall, supported by rows of intricately carved wooden ceilings and 400 ancient columns. These columns were sourced from various Roman sites in Tunisia, and their varying styles and shapes add to the hall’s unique aesthetic.
Know before you visit:
Researching how to visit the mosque, I’ve come across a lot of people saying that you cannot visit if you’re a foreigner or that locals can be very rude, which can’t be further from the truth. First of all, yes, you can visit— it does not matter what nationality or religion you are. Secondly, the locals were really nice. Everyone was helpful, and I definitely felt welcomed.
Dress appropriately: Since this is an active place of worship, dress modestly to respect local customs. If you do not have appropriate attire, you may rent some at the entrance.
Entrance cost: The entrance costs ~ €3,60.
Best time to visit: Avoid praying hours as you might not be allowed to visit.
Opening hours: The mosque is open daily from 8 AM to 2 PM.
