Solo Female Travel

in Jordan

Overall Jordan is a very safe place for solo female travellers and there are plenty of females who travel across Jordan alone so you are bound to meet similar solo females along your journey.

The Jordanian people are extremely friendly and welcoming towards females so expect a lot of people making conversation with you, buying you food and gifts and not expecting anything in return!

What to expect:

Staring – it isn’t an unfriendly stare as people are just interested in you and think it is unusual that a female is alone without a group or a male companion

Catcalling – this is quite common but again nothing unfriendly, it just may make you feel uncomfortable at times if men are saying things to you in Arabic that you don’t understand

Being asked if you are married or receiving marriage proposals – if you feel uncomfortable with this then just say you are married or even wear a ring to get rid of any unwanted attention

Being asked to have a ‘one night stand’ with men – if you don’t want to do this then just politely decline or say you are married or have a boyfriend

Bedouin Love Scam

This is something that I personally experienced in Petra but fortunately did some research online and came across the ‘Bedouin Love Scam’.

It always starts the same way. A Bedouin man will approach a female who is alone and invite them to stay in their cave and spend the night stargazing. As well as this they will tell you there will be a desert party with a Bedouin dinner and they will even show you around Petra!

It all sounds very tempting until you read the horror stories online about what actually happens…

Some women describe the Bedouin men as getting aggressive after drinking, drugging them, and sexually assaulting or even raping them. There is even a story about a Bedouin man and his friends who invited a couple along and drugged both the girlfriend and boyfriend and each of them had their way with the girlfriend.

So whatever you do, DO NOT accept this invitation to their cave.

Even if you want to spend the night with a Bedouin man, there are stories of Bedouin men extorting women for money the next day or pursuing a relationship with her and telling her his donkey has died or his mother is in the hospital to extort money from her.
