Complex History

Ancient Moldova was part of the broader Roman Empire, witnessing various migratory waves and invasions by Goths, Huns, and Bulgars. Over the centuries, the region experienced Byzantine, Ottoman, and Mongol influences. The 19th century brought about a series of changes, with Moldova experiencing periods of Russian and Ottoman domination, ultimately leading to its inclusion in the Russian Empire. After World War I, Moldova became part of Romania, only to be annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Moldova gained independence in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

In 1990, Transnistria declared independence Moldova, this led to a brief but intense armed conflict in 1992. A ceasefire was brokered by Russian and Ukrainian peacekeepers. Transnistria still remains unrecognised internationally. The region maintains close ties with Russia and has its own government, military, and currency.
