The best way to travel to Leon is by chicken bus. If you are in Managua then head to UCA bus station and take a chicken bus or minivan to Leon. The minivans are slightly more expensive but are a faster way to travel to Leon.

Top Things to do:

1. Volcano Boarding
Volcano boarding offers an exhilarating adventure unlike any other. You will travel to the Cerro Negro volcano. Here you will climb up this incredible volcano with your board and then descend down its steep slopes. This experience is thrilling and for those who consider themselves adrenaline junkies!! Now it is relatively safe but make sure you have the right travel insurance to cover you for adventure sports as accidents do happen!

To book a tour the easiest way to do this is via your hostel. Most hostels will offer different tours and you can pay them for whichever one you want. It should cost around $35.
2. Basilica Cathedral
The Basilica Cathedral was constructed over the span of several centuries. This grandiose structure is renowned as one of Central America’s largest and most significant cathedrals. The most impressive thing about the cathedral is you can wander around its rooftop. You will have to purchase a ticket for this, but the views of Leon and the surrounding volcanoes make this trip worth it.
3. Iglesia de la Recoleccion
The Iglesia de la Recolección is a stunning example of colonial architecture and religious heritage. Constructed in the 18th century by Spanish colonisers, this historic church has a blend of Baroque and Mudejar styles. The interior has exquisite altars, gilded embellishments, and vibrant frescoes. This is an incredible piece of history which symbolises Nicaragua’s colonial past.
4. Plaza Parque Central
La Cascada de San Ramon is a majestic waterfall that cascades down a series of rocky cliffs, creating a beautiful display of natural beauty and serenity. To reach the waterfall, you will go on a scenic hike through the landscapes, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the tropical rainforest. Once you reach the waterfall you can take a dip into the cool pool below the waterfall.
