Why Visit Lake Atitlan?
Lake Atitlan is located in the highlands, this stunning volcanic lake is surrounded by picturesque villages, each with its unique charm. The lake’s crystal-clear waters reflect the majestic volcanoes that encircle it, creating breathtaking views. Adventurous travellers can hike the surrounding volcanoes, kayak on the tranquil lake, or explore the lush trails. The serene ambience and stunning scenery of Lake Atitlan make it a must-visit destination.
How to Travel to Lake Atitlan?
From Antigua, the best way to travel to Lake Atitlan is to take a shuttle bus. You can book a shuttle here they usually cost around $15-20. If you want to travel from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan, then you can book a shuttle here (Atitlan). It should cost $25-35.
I spoke to a local about taking a chicken bus however they told me there is no direct route and honestly it just seemed too complicated to take this option. If you would like to do this then take a bus from Antigua to Chimaltenango. Then from here take another chicken bus from Chimaltenango to Los Encuentros. Then from here take another bus to Solalà and then one further one to Panajachel.
How to Travel Around Lake Atitlan?
The best way to travel around is by boat. Boats are not too frequent but if you ask at your hostel/hotel they will guide you to the departure times. You could always take a local bus as well to travel from each village but once again there is no fixed time for these buses so you may be waiting a while till one turns up.
To get from Panajachel to San Pedro La Laguna this will cost 30 GTQ ($3.80).
