Take a bus to Ciudad Quesada, this cost 3,000 CRC or $5. Then you should change buses to get one to La Fortuna, this cost 1,600 CRC or $3. At the time I was there, there was no direct bus but this may be different when you travel there. You can check the times here.
From Monteverde
Take the bus-boat-bus option. This is a really nice option if you want to see brilliant views of the Volcano Arenal. It costs 16,000 CRC or $28 which is more expensive than taking the public transport option but the views and the experience of travelling by boat are worth it! You can book your trip using this link.

If you want to travel via public transport to La Fortuna from Monteverde then you should take a bus to Tilaran and then one from here to La Fortuna.

Top things to do:

1. La Fortuna Waterfall
This magnificent 70 metre high waterfall is located in the Arenal Volcano National Park and stands at 520m. As you enter the park you will have to descend down 530 steps to reach this natural beauty. Once you reach the waterfall you will be able to witness its colossal size and power.

When the weather is good you can even take a refreshing swim in the river. Be sure not to miss the lookout points before entering the steps down to the waterfall and at the waterfall itself. They offer impressive views that should not be missed. There is also another waterfall located at the bottom of the steps which may not be as impressive but still worth admiring.

The entrance fee is $18.

2. Mini-Tabacon Hot Springs
If you are on a tight budget and want to experience the natural wonder of the hot springs then these will be perfect for you! These hot springs are nestled away along the main road and are completely free. This river is heated by magma to the temperature of bathwater. So soak it up, enjoy a nice swim or even have a delicious BBQ. Just be aware that it can get very muddy after it’s been raining and there is no proper place to get changed or leave your belongings so be sure to change before you get here.

If you would prefer a more luxurious experience of the hot springs then you could go to: Tabacon Hot Springs, Baldi Hot Springs, or EcoTermales Hot Springs. These will all come at a higher price but if you are after luxury then this will suit your needs.
3. Arenal Volcano National Park
La Fortuna is renowned for its iconic Arenal Volcano. Its an active stratovolcano that offers a stunning backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park’s diverse ecosystem includes rainforests and beautiful hiking trails, providing visitors with an opportunity to witness the region’s natural wonders up close.

There are several different hiking trails you can take around this national park. You will be able to pick the right one for you when you reach the main entrance as you will be provided with a map with all the routes.

The entrance costs $15.
