Kravica Waterfall, Fortica, Blagaj, and Počitelj Tour

Whilst in Bosnia an absolute must thing to do is to see Kravica Waterfall, Fortica, Blagaj, and Počitelj. These are 4 incredible sites that will not disappoint you. You could hire a car and see these sites at your own pace or even take the bus from Mostar, but if you’re not a fan of driving along the roads of Bosnia then taking a tour is the best option for you.

The cost of the tour is 60 BAM (€30) per person but there has to be a minimum of 2 people for this tour to run.

The guy who runs the tour is a very friendly gentleman who will provide you with information about each place along the journey and will give you as much time as you need to visit each site. In summer, he will even arrange a bar crawl and evening meal for you after the tour if this is something you are interested in.

Here is a link to the website where you can book the tour.

Fortica

Up on the top of the mountain located 15m above the slopes of Fortica, there is a skywalk area where you can see stunning views over Mostar and the surrounding mountains. It was built in 2020 and is completely free to visit. It is worth the trip up here even in winter when it’s cold. There is even a restaurant at the top so if you fancy embracing the views and having a bite to eat or something to drink this is possible. The perfect time to go is for sunset as you can see the beautiful sunset over the mountains surrounding Mostar. If the weather is good and you enjoy hiking then this would be a perfect hike up to the top of the mountain as you can embrace the views along the way. But if you’re not feeling up for this then you can easily drive up to the top.

Kravica Waterfall

Located 40km south of Mostar is Kravica Waterfall. Its height is about 25 metres and is the most beautiful spot on the tour. The best time to visit is during spring time but it’s open all year round. In winter, you can enjoy the emptiness of this park as very few tourists come, however, you won’t want to swim as the water will be extremely cold. In summer, the waterfall gets very busy and can see up to 3000 tourists each day and there can be long queues to enter the park but it’s still worth coming here if you have time. There are restaurants in the vicinity and you could spend all day here enjoying the sun and swimming. It costs 20 BAM (€10) to enter the park and you will have to pay this on top of what you have paid for your tour.

Blagaj

Blagaj is a village located near Mostar and has the remnants of an old Ottoman-style building built in 1520.  The monastery was considered a place of spiritual retreat and reflection and many people make pilgrimages here still today. There is a beautiful blue river running underneath the cliff and by the side of the monastery which makes this place so calming and spectacular to admire.

The beautiful architecture of the monastery should be admired from both sides of the Buna river, as on the opposite of the river to the monastery you can see some caves above the monastery which were used by humans back in 4200BC as human life was found inside the caves such as: campfire, flints, carved bones and ceramics.

You can enter the monastery for a price of 10 BAM (€5) and when you approach the monastery you will need to cover your hair with a scarf if you are female and dress appropriately to enter. There are scarves outside that are provided for free.

Počitelj

This is a historic village is located on the left bank of the river Neretva. This village dates back to 1383 and was considered a place of strategic importance during the fall of the Bosnian medieval state and Ottoman conquests. The village lost its strategic role in 1878 which helped to preserve the village to its present-day condition. This village suffered extensive damage during the war between 1992-1995 and many of the population living here were ethnically cleansed.

Here you should walk along the old cobbled streets of Počitelj as it takes you back in time and makes you feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the Ottoman Empire.
You should also see:
    • The fort – there are magnificent panoramic views over the village and surrounding countryside here
    • Mosque of Šišman Ibrahim-paša
    • Hamam (the baths)
    • Clock Tower
    • Different housing located around the village
