Visiting Copán Ruinas is an enchanting journey into the heart of Honduras’ rich cultural past and breathtaking natural landscapes. Located amidst the rolling hills and tropical forests, this charming town is renowned for its archaeological ruins. Particularly the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Copán Ruins the ancient Mayan ruins. Exploring these intricate stone structures, adorned with intricate carvings and hieroglyphics, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Mayan civilisation’s past. How to travel to Copán Ruinas?
If you are travelling from La Ceiba then you can take the bus to San Pedro Sula. There are many companies offering buses on this route but I used Cristina bus company. This should cost 180HNL ($7.20). Then change buses and take the bus offered by the company Casasola Express to Copán Ruinas. This will cost 150 HNL ($6) and you can buy this on the bus.
You could also take a shuttle bus from La Ceiba or from other surrounding countries. Gekko Explorer offers shuttles to Copán Ruinas.

Copán Ruins is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its breathtaking Mayan architecture and rich cultural past. You can see intricately carved stelae, altars, and hieroglyphic stairways, each telling a story of the city’s illustrious past. The centrepiece of the site is the Hieroglyphic Stairway, with over 2,000 glyphs detailing the history and mythology of the ancient Maya rulers. To enter the main site this will cost $15.
2. Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum at Copán Ruins is located near the entrance to the archaeological park, the museum houses an impressive collection of artefacts unearthed from the surrounding ruins. You can explore exhibits showcasing intricately carved stelae, ceremonial vessels, and intricate pottery.. One of the museum’s highlights is a detailed replica of the Hieroglyphic Stairway, offering a closer look at the intricate hieroglyphs. Don’t forget to see Rosalia Temple – this magnificently preserved ancient temple is one to admire. It costs $7 to enter.
3. Underground Tunnels
The underground tunnels at Copán Ruins is a collection of subterranean passageways, intricately carved into the limestone bedrock beneath the main acropolis.
