Belize City: Explore this Caribbean City

To be absolutely honest, Belize City is not one for the faint-hearted. Belize City is dangerous and there is a high amount of gang lead violence. Although this does not usually involve tourists, if you plan to visit here please exercise a high amount of caution! Be particularly careful if you plan to go south of Haulover Creek.

In Belize City, you can experience its old colonial past and find things such as the famous red British Post Box. There are also some interesting architectural structures dotted around the city.

How to travel to Belize City?

The easiest way to travel is to fly by plane into Belize City Airport. You can fly here from other Central American countries as well as the USA. If you fly into Belize City Airport there is no public transport to take you to the main city. The cheapest option to get to the city is to pre-book a transfer, you can do this on Viator.

You can also take a bus from other main cities such as San Ignacio and Palacencia to the main bus station in Belize City.

The Spanish were the first to lay claim to the region, but their attempts at settlement were met with resistance from indigenous groups. Subsequently, the British began to establish a presence in the area, drawn by its strategic location and lucrative logging industry. Over time, Belize evolved into a British colony known as British Honduras, with the British Crown exerting control over the territory. You can still remanence of the former colony today with the different colonial buildings in Belize City and even a British Post Box!
5. Haulover Creek
Lined with bustling docks and colourful boats, this picturesque creek serves as a vibrant hub of maritime commerce. Its shores bear witness to centuries of history, from the days of British colonial rule to the bustling trade activities of today. The best time to go is nearing sunset where you can get picturesque views. Be aware of going south of the Creek as this is where high gang crime occurs!
