Bangkok: Top Things to Do

Top Things To Do:
1. Jim Thompson House Museum – A Tale of Silk and Mystery
Tucked away in a lush garden, the Jim Thompson House is an oasis of calm right in the heart of Bangkok. This traditional Thai house tells the story of the American silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson. The guided tour is captivating, exploring the mystery behind Thompson’s unexplained disappearance in Malaysia, as well as offering insights into Thai customs and traditions.

2. Wat Sam Phran – The Dragon Temple
If you’re up for something truly unique, head to Wat Sam Phran, also known as the Dragon Temple. This 17-story, pink cylindrical tower wrapped in a massive dragon is straight out of a fantasy novel! You can actually walk inside the dragon’s body for panoramic views of the surroundings. It’s a bit far from everything else, but if you have a full day available, try to combine it with the floating markets.

3. The Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew – Royal Grandeur
Probably the most visited place in Bangkok, this amazing complex was once the home of Thai kings. Inside, you will also find Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, a symbol of national pride and spirituality.
Tip: Make sure to wear modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) to respect the dress code.

4. Wat Arun – The Temple of Dawn
Across the river from the Grand Palace, Wat Arun stands tall with its iconic spires adorned in colorful porcelain. Climbing the steep steps of the central prang rewards you with stunning views of the Chao Phraya River, especially during sunset when the temple glows with a golden hue.
The easiest way to get to Wat Arun is to take a boat across the river ( costs 5 THB one way).
Tip: For a beautiful sunset view of Wat Arun, head over to the Before Sunset ice cream shop located on the other side of the river.

5. Wat Ratchabophit – The Hidden Gem
Often overlooked, Wat Ratchabophit is a serene escape with its circular courtyard and a mix of Thai and Gothic architecture. The temple’s inner walls are decorated with intricate floral patterns that are nothing short of breathtaking.

6. The Erawan Museum – A Mythical Adventure
The Erawan Museum was probably my favourite place to visit in Bangkok. The museum is guarded by a colossal three-headed elephant statue. Inside, the museum is just as impressive, with stained-glass ceilings and exhibits showcasing Thai mythology and art. The spiritual and artistic vibes here are truly unique.

7. A Day Trip on the Death Railway
If you have time, make sure to include a day trip to the Death Railway. The train ride takes you through lush landscapes and across the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, which was built during World War II. It’s a powerful reminder of the past, set against the stunning backdrop of western Thailand.

8. Chinatown – A Food Lover’s Paradise
When the sun sets, make your way to Chinatown on Yaowarat Road for a street food adventure. From crispy pork belly to mango sticky rice, the flavors are bold and unforgettable. Wander through the neon-lit streets, stopping at stalls and little shops for some of the best eats in Bangkok.

9. Bangkok National Museum – Dive into Thai History
For a deeper understanding of Thailand’s rich culture, spend a few hours at the Bangkok National Museum. With its impressive collection of artifacts, from ancient Buddhist art to royal regalia, this museum brings the country’s history to life. English-language tours are available, making it easy to explore.

10. Cabaret Show – A Night of Glitz and Glamour
End your day with a bang at one of Bangkok’s iconic cabaret shows. With glittering costumes, lip-sync performances, and dazzling choreography, these shows are a celebration of diversity and talent. It’s an evening of pure entertainment and a side of Bangkok you won’t soon forget! I chose the one at the Asiatique Market where they also offer a traditional Thai dinner before the show.
