Top Things To Do

1. Hue Historic Citadel
The main attraction of the city is the Historic Citadel. Take your time and wander around the Citadel’s grounds and admire the impressive architecture, a blend of traditional Vietnamese design and influences from Chinese and French architectural styles.
The Citadel is divided into 3 key areas:

  • Kinh Thanh (Capital Citadel) – the outermost area of the complex. It functioned as a defensive barrier, safeguarding the Imperial City.
  • Hoang Thanh (Imperial City) – the central area within the Citadel. It functioned as the administrative and ceremonial heart of the Nguyen dynasty.
  • Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City) – located in the heart of the Imperial City. This area was the private residence of the emperor and his family.

Info: tickets cost 200.000 VND (~US$ 7.60) and you can buy an additional audioguide for 100.000 VND (~US$ 3.80).
2. Thien Mu Pagoda
Built in 1601, the seven-story pagoda is the tallest religious building in Vietnam. The pagoda is located on Ha Khe Hill and offers beautiful views over the Perfume River.

Here you will also find the car in which Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk, travelled to Saigon in 1963 before self-immolating in protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government.

Info:  the pagoda is free to visit
3. Perfume River
The Perfume River gets its name from the fragrant flowers that fall into it from orchards upriver, giving the water a pleasant aroma. This phenomenon occurs during autumn, from September to November.

You can choose to take a boat ride along the Perfume River to see the city’s landscape from a different perspective.
