Tumultuous Past
Before the arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th century, the region was inhabited by Mayan civilisations. Guatemala remained under Spanish control until the early 19th century when it gained independence in 1821. However, the new nation struggled with political instability, marked by dictatorships, civil wars, and social inequality. The latter half of the 20th century saw the country in a brutal civil war that lasted for 36 years. Despite its tumultuous past, Guatemala today is relatively peaceful, however, there is still a problem with gangs to this day.
