Nicaragua: Solo Female Travel

While Nicaragua is generally a safe destination, it’s essential to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. As a solo female, you will experience perhaps quite a bit of attention but most of it is positive. To be safe stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night, and avoid walking alone after dark. It’s advisable to dress modestly and respect local customs to avoid unwanted attention.
Additionally, keep your belongings secure and be cautious of petty theft, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Read reviews of any hostels or hotels you will stay in to make sure you’re staying somewhere safe.
Safety and Scams
Taxis/Tours/Guides – Make sure to always agree on a price before starting the journey or tour as if you don’t they will rip you off and charge you a lot more than what you should have paid so make sure to always do this.
Demonstrations – it is illegal for foreigners to participate in protests. Avoid large gatherings at all costs as you may be arrested and they can turn violent.
Violent Crimes – although these do not usually affect foreigners, be sure to be careful when travelling at night, avoid public transport and keep car windows up.
