Welcome to Taormina, where every cobblestone whispers tales of ancient civilisations, and the scent of citrus lingers in the air like a sweet promise of adventure. Nestled on the picturesque cliffs of Sicily, this enchanting town captivates travellers with its stunning views, rich history, and vibrant culture. Join me on a journey through the sun-kissed streets of Taormina as we uncover its hidden treasures and timeless allure.
How to get to Taormina
The closest big airport to Taormina is the Catania-Fontanarossa Airport. From here you can take a bus, a train or rent a car. The easiest way to get around would be, in my opinion, by car since it gives you the freedom to check out other cities close by.
Top Things To Do
1. Duomo di Taormina
The Duomo di Taormina is a magnificent cathedral located in the heart of the town. The first construction of the cathedral dates back to the 13th century on the ruins of a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. With its austere stone façade, it resembles more a fortress than a religious institution.
2. Corso Umberto
Corso Umberto is the bustling main street of Taormina. Lined with charming cafes, boutique shops, and lively piazzas, this pedestrian street invites us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant Sicilian life. Take a leisurely stroll, savour the aroma of freshly brewed espresso or indulge in delectable pastries at local pastry shops.
3. Piazza IX Aprile
Located in the centre of Corso Umberto, Piazza IX Aprile is the main square of Taormina. A great place to relax and people watch, the square is known for its amazing views over the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.
4. Public Garden Taormina
Known as one of the most panoramic places in Taormina, the garden is filled with lush vegetation making it the best place to retreat from the crowds and the hot weather.
The villa belonged to Lady Florence Trevelyan, a Scottish noblewoman and became the property of the municipality in 1922.
5. Teatro Antico di Taormina
Visiting the Greek Theatre is absolutely a must experience. Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Sicily, this ancient amphitheater offers an unforgettable journey through time. Imagine being surrounded by history as you take in panoramic views of Mount Etna and the Mediterranean Sea.
The construction of the amphitheatre likely commenced during the third century BC, attributed to the Greeks under the rule of Hiero II.
From captivating performances to awe-inspiring vistas, Teatro Antico di Taormina is a joyous celebration of Sicily’s rich heritage, guaranteed to leave you smiling from ear to ear!
6. Isola Bella
My absolute favourite was the magnificent Isola Bella. Translating to “beautiful island’ Isola Bella has become, with the Greek Theatre (Teatro Antico di Taormina), the symbol of Taormina.
The beach surrounding the island is free to access by anyone and it makes a pretty nice sunset spot. You also have the option to rent a sunbed from the various vendors on the beach.
If you wish to access the interior of the islet (which has become the Regional Naturalistic Museum of Isola Bella since 2011), the cost is 6 euros per person.
Where should you stay?
Budget – Le nuove porte di Taormina – located a few steps from Villagonia Beach and 2.8 km from Isola Bella Beach
Medium – Bella Tao – located right in the centre of Taormina, offers easy access to all the main attractions.
High – Splendid Hotel Taormina – overlooks the Ionian Sea and the Calabrian coast, a short walk from Taormina’s picturesque town centre and a 3-minute walk from Corso Umberto main street.
