Jurmala: A day trip from Riga

Jurmala is the biggest city resort in the Baltics, stretching 32 km (20 miles). Known for its sandy beaches, it’s the perfect day trip from Riga, or, if you have the time, you can easily spend a few days here relaxing.
How to get to Jurmala
The easiest way to get here is to take the train from Riga. The journey is just 30 minutes and tickets cost just €1.50 one way. You can buy your tickets directly at the train station and I’d recommend buying a return ticket as well as sometimes the ticket office in Jurmala is closed.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can grab a bike and pedal your way to Jurmala since it’s just a 25-kilometer ride. You’ll pass through neat neighbourhoods and beautiful forests, with the sea breeze keeping you company.
Exploring Jurmala by Bike
Once you’re in Jurmala, I think the best way to explore is to rent a bike. Renting a bike is super easy since there are a lot of rental places all over the city.
Start your journey by cruising down Jomas Street. It’s like the heartbeat of Jurmala, with cute cafes, shops, and street performers everywhere. Then, pedal your way into the pine forests along the coast. It’s so peaceful and pretty, you won’t want to leave!
Another amazing thing is that you can bike on the beach! So consider biking back to the centre at sunset when the day cools down and the colours are pretty.
Relaxing and Having Fun
If cycling is not your thing, then you can just chill on the beach and explore the city! Jurmala’s beaches are amazing, with soft sand and sparkling water. You can swim, build sandcastles, or just lay back and soak up the sun. One thing you should know is that, at least during summer, the sea doesn’t usually have any waves.
The pretties place to walk around is Jomas Street. This pedestrian street is the heart of Jurmala, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to stroll, people-watch, and soak up the lively atmosphere.
Feeling hungry? There are tons of awesome restaurants and cafes in Jurmala serving up delicious treats. Try some fresh seafood or yummy Latvian dishes – you won’t be disappointed! But keep in mind that since it is a very touristy place, eating out is more expensive than in other parts of Latvia. So if you are on a budget consider bringing your own lunch.
If you have time consider taking a boat tour along the Lielupe River and the Gulf of Riga. Enjoy breathtaking views of Jurmala’s coastline, forests, and wildlife from a unique perspective.
Where should you stay?
If you’re thinking of spending the night in Jurmala, keep in mind that is not a cheap destination so prices in the high season usually start around €70 per night.
You can find a lot of options on Booking, but try to book ahead as the best places rent out fast.
