Ancient history

Tunisia was home to various ancient civilisations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines. In the 7th century, Arab Muslims conquered the region, bringing Islam to Tunisia. The country subsequently saw rule by various dynasties, including the Aghlabids, Fatimids, and the Zirids. In the 16th century, Tunisia became part of the Ottoman Empire. It gained independence from France in 1956, becoming a republic with Habib Bourguiba as its first president.
 
In recent years, Tunisia played a significant role in the Arab Spring, leading to the ousting of President Ben Ali in 2011 and the establishment of a democratic government. Its history is marked by a blend of cultures and a continuous quest for independence and self-governance.
