Complex history
Azerbaijan’s history is rich and diverse, with changes culturally, politically, and geographically. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, the region has been home to various civilisations, including the ancient Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Mongols. Azerbaijan is well known for being part of the Silk Road, which was the hub of trade and exchange in culture between East and West.
In the modern era, Azerbaijan endured Russian and later Soviet rule, before gaining independence in 1991. More recently there has been ongoing conflict between Armenia which primarily centres around the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This is a disputed territory which has lead to multiple violent clashes and a significant displacement of people.
