Khor Virap, Noravank Monastery, and Tatev Monastery

To see all three of these sites you could easily join a tour group or you could hire a car to visit these sites yourself. Or even try travelling the local way to get to these sites. This article will breakdown why you should visit each site as well how you can get there yourself.

Khor Virap

This ancient monastery, has a stunning backdrop of Mount Ararat’s peaks. Its roots trace back to the 4th century, making it one of the country’s oldest Christian sites.  At Khor Virap a famous tale is told of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. He endured imprisonment in its pit for thirteen years before emerging to become Armenia’s patron saint. Today, the monastery’s serene surroundings, breathtaking view of Mount Ararat, and its religious past make this a must see.
How to get here?
Take the bus 467 from Yerevan Southern bus station to Khor Virap. This journey should cost you 500AMD (€1.20).
Where should you stay?
B&B Sunrise House Aygavan – Located a short distance away from Khor Virap, you can rent a bike here and visit this monastery and enjoy a nice free breakfast with a beautiful view.

Noravank Monastery

Located in Vayots Dzor Province, Noravank Monastery is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and spiritual devotion. Dating back to the 13th century, it is renowned for its intricate stone carvings, and facades within the Amaghu Gorge. Noravank Monastery also holds historical significance as the spiritual centre of the Orbelian noble family. This family played a crucial role in preserving Armenian culture.
 
How to get here?
Unfortunately there is no direct public transport. You will need to take a bus from Kilikia Bus Station to Jermuk for 2000 AMD (€4.80).There are 2 buses which depart from Yerevan. And then either hitchhike/walk/take a taxi to Noravank. This taxi will cost 5000AMD (€12).
Where should you stay?
LiViTi – Located close to the monastery, there is a garden in the hotel as well as cosy rooms and modern furnishings.

Tatev Monastery

Tatev Monastery overlooks the Vorotan River Gorge, and was founded in the 9th century. The Surb Poghos-Petros Church, has intricate stone carvings, and the defense walls show the incredible craftsmanship of the era. The Wings of Tatev, a spectacular aerial tramway, now offers you a panoramic journey to the monastery. There is a priest who resides in the monastery and if you wish to you can receive a blessing. For a return trip on The Wings of Tatev it is 7000 AMD (€16.70).
How to get here?
Unfortunately there is no direct public transport. You will need to take the 607 bus from Yerevan Southern bus station to Goris as there are no direct routes, you can check the times here. This will cost 3000AMD (€6). And then take a taxi to The Wings of Tatev. This will cost 2000AMD (€4.80).

Old Tatev Guesthouse – this historic guesthouse has a sense of rustic elegance, offering you a unique opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions as well as the stunning views.
