Complex history:

Armenia is situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and this region has been inhabited since ancient times. Throughout its history, Armenia experienced periods of independence and foreign rule, including Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. One of the most tragic chapters in Armenian history is the Armenian Genocide of 1915. During which a significant portion of the Armenian population perished. However, the early 20th century also saw the establishment of the First Armenian Republic in 1918. In the aftermath of World War I, Armenia fell under Soviet rule and remained so until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
 
Today, there is ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is around the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. With the most intense phase of this conflict occurring in 2020. This lead to a large-scale military confrontation and resulting in a ceasefire backed by Russia.
