Why visit Mestia?

Mestia is nestled in the breathtaking Svaneti region of Georgia. The town is surrounded by towering, snow-capped peaks, making it perfect for hikers. How to get to Mestia?

The best way to travel here is by plane. Mestia has a very small airport and therefore to get here you will need to take a small propeller plane. You can do this either from Kutaisi or from Tbilisi. The only company running these planes is Vanilla Sky. The cost of the journey from Tbilisi is 90 GEL (€31) and from Kutaisi 50 GEL (€17). The plane that leaves from Tbilisi leaves from an airport in Natakhtari. There is a free shuttle bus which picks you up opposite the bicycle monument near the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel in Tbilisi. To see the best views on this journey you should sit on the right-hand side of the plane either from Kutaisi or Tbilisi.

There are buses from Kutaisi, Tbilisi, Zugdidi and Batumi that all travel to Mestia. So if you don’t fancy travelling by plane then it’s still possible to travel here.

Top things to do in Mestia:

1. Hiking
One of the best things to do in Mestia is to go hiking! Hiking offers the perfect adventure through the stunning landscapes of the Svaneti region. There are plenty of well-marked trails for all levels of expertise. You can explore the different valleys, alpine meadows, and mountain passes. The trails often lead to picturesque villages, ancient towers, and breathtaking views. You can join expeditions or go hiking alone, whatever you fancy, Mestia can cater to this.
2. Mestia Cable Car
The Mestia Cable Car is a remarkable piece of engineering. It connects the town with the slopes of the Hatsvali Mountain. Riding the Mestia Cable Car allows you to see the stunning landscapes of the Svaneti region. Once you reach the top of the cable cars there are numerous hiking routes you can take which have the most fantastic views. There is also a restaurant at the top for if you fancy a scenic lunch! The cost of the cable car is 20 GEL (€7) for a return trip up and down the mountain.
3. Mavkhovris Tadzari
This historic site boasts a collection of traditional Svanetian towers and buildings, preserving the unique architecture and way of life of this mountainous region. Visitors to Mavkhovris Tadzari can explore the intricate craftsmanship of the structures. As well as this, you can admire the beautiful picturesque views this spot has to offer.

Where should you stay in Mestia?

BudgetHostel SvanLand – This hostel is affordable as well as having some of the most breathtaking views in Mestia. Although it is located out of the centre, it is worth venturing out of the centre for the immaculate views.
