Georgia's complex history
The country has had various kingdoms ruling over the centuries, including the ancient Colchis and Iberia. Later it became a significant part of the Byzantine and Persian empires. The introduction of Christianity in the 4th century shaped Georgia to be one of the oldest Christian nations. Over the years, there were invasions from the Mongols, Persians and Ottomans. Then in 19th century, it achieved its independence, before falling under Soviet rule in the 20th century. In 1991, Georgia established its independence from the Soviet Union. This was followed by 2 regions breaking away from Georgia – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This has led to the current conflict between Georgia and Russia, as Russia supports their claims for independence.
