What makes Veliko Tarnovo unique?
With its dramatic cliffs carved out by the Yantra River and rolling hills, Veliko Tarnovo is a sight to behold. Everywhere you go in the city you will find evidence of its impressive past from ancient fortresses to preserved churches.
One of the most remarkable features of the city is its incredible Old Town. Located in the heart of the city, the Old Town is home to a well-preserved citadel and some of the most breathtaking views.
What’s more, the entire area is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site making it one of the top places to visit in the entire country.
The city's rich history
Veliko Tarnovo has an impressive and dark history that dates all the way back to the 12th century. At the time, the city was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and was a major seat of power. It is renowned as one of the most influential cultural and economic centres of the entire medieval period. Today, visitors can admire the architecture of the city’s ancient churches and monasteries as well as enjoy incredible views of the nearby mountain ranges.

1. Tsarevets fortress
The unparalleled beauty of Veliko Tarnovo can be seen in its exceptional architecture. The city is also home to numerous charming cobbled streets and a wealth of impressive fortresses and churches.
Perhaps the most awe-inspiring of them all is in the city’s historic Tsarevets fortress. Sitting atop a cliff, visitors will be amazed by the views of the city that the fortress provides. Rebuilt after its destruction by the Ottoman Empire in 1393, the fortress is an exceptional example of the city’s proud, yet turbulent, past.
With so much cultural and architectural importance, it’s no wonder why Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most beautiful cities in the entire country.
It only costs 10 BGN (about €5) to enter the fortress, and depending on the language, guided tours begin at 20 BGN (about €10).
2. Gurko Street
With its traditional homes constructed during the Revival Period, Gurko Street has to be the most Instagrammable location in Veliko Tarnovo.
The road bears the name of Russian General Gurko. He rose to fame as a result of his successful operations and victories during the liberation struggle against the Turkish invaders.
You can find shops, restaurants, a hotel, workshops, and a lot of very friendly kitties on this lovely cobbled street.
3. Park "Sveta Gora"
The most lovely park in the former capital of Veliko Tarnovo is Sveta Gora Park. It’s the perfect location to have a relaxing walk and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of Veliko Tarnovo.
The best viewpoint in the park is at the Asen Dynasty Monument, where many people go to enjoy the sunset. You can also stop here for a quick coffee at The Gallery. Although you’ll see that many locals, as well as other tourists, bring their own drinks and sit around the monument.
4.Take a trip to Devetashka Cave
One of the most stunning caves I’ve ever seen is Devetashka Cave, which will undoubtedly give you the impression that you’ve travelled back in time, which is no wonder since it is believed to date back to the Stone Age.
It was used as a secret military base in the 1950s and is now home to a massive colony of bats.
While I’ve read that many people paid to visit the cave, there wasn’t an entrance fee when I went in 2021. Parking is available on the land next to the cave entrance.
If you don’t have a car you can take a train from Veliko Tarnovo to Lovech and from there hire a taxi which should be around €10 – €15.
5.Visit Arbanasi Village
The small village of Arbanasi is a living museum, despite being a less popular tourist destination in Bulgaria.
To get there you can hike for about an hour from the Tsarevets Fortress, or more easily hire a taxi.

How to get to Veliko Tarnovo
If you are not planning on renting a car, the easiest way to get to Veliko Tarnovo is by taking a bus, or a train from Sofia, Pleven or Plovdiv.
