Bosnia and Herzegovina: Ultimate 7-Day Travel Itinerary

We’ve built this travel itinerary to cover all the important things we think should be seen in Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you don’t have 7 days to explore you can easily break it down into fewer days by just picking what is most important for you to see. However, we recommend spending at least 3 days to visit the most essential parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and not get overwhelmed. You can find at the end of the article a 3-day and a 5-day suggested itinerary to help you get inspired.

Day 1 - Sarajevo

Sarajevo is such a beautiful capital city surrounded by the beautiful Bosnian mountains this is truly a destination you don’t want to miss. It is such a nice place to wander around as the colourful buildings stretching along the calming river make you feel as though you could be in Amsterdam or Copenhagen, but these contrast with the old cobbled streets and mosques that lie several streets away.
Be sure to visit:
    • Sarajevo City Hall
    • The Latin Bridge
    • Sacred Heart Cathedral
    • Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque
    • Museums of crimes against Humanity and Genocide 1992-1995

Day 2 - Kravica Waterfall, Fortica, Blagaj, Pocitelj

Whilst in Bosnia and Herzegovina an absolute must thing to do is to see Kravica Waterfall, Fortica, Blagaj, and Počitelj. These are 4 incredible sites that will not disappoint you.
Kravica Waterfalls

Perhaps the most beautiful site on this tour, the waterfall is 25 metres in height and is surrounded by incredible mountains and woodlands. You can swim here and take it easy at the restaurants which provide delicious food.

Blagaj
This village has the remnant of an old Ottoman-style building built in 1520 which you can explore inside and admire the beautiful architecture and river which runs beside it.
Počitelj
This is a historic village located on the left bank of the river Neretva. This village dates back to 1383 and was considered a place of strategic importance during the fall of the Bosnian medieval state and Ottoman conquests. Here you should walk along the old cobbled streets of Počitelj as it takes you back in time and makes you feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the Ottoman Empire.
Fortica
Up on the top of the mountain located 15m above the slopes of Fortica there is a skywalk area where you can see stunning views over Mostar and the surrounding mountains.

Day 3 - Mostar

Mostar is the most beautiful city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a trip here would not be complete without visiting Mostar. The most famous thing about Mostar is Stari Most. This beautiful bridge makes Mostar so atmospheric with the blue-green water of the river beneath and the surrounding mountains. If you walk around the streets of Mostar you can see: the crooked bridge, war-torn buildings around Mostar, Mosques, and visit some museums.

Day 4 - Neretva River, Lake Jabalanica, Konjic

Neretva River
This river starts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and flows through Croatia to the Adriatic Sea. This river is one of the coldest rivers in the world often only being a few degrees in temperature and is fed by 3 different glaciers. The river is a spectacular sight in itself as the water is an incredible blue-green colour that almost doesn’t seem real but it is and your eyes aren’t deceiving you! It flows through the main touristy places: Jablanica, Mostar, and Počitelj so be sure to stop and admire this view.

Lake Jabalanica
This is a large artificially formed lake on the Neretva river. It is a stunning place to stop by and take a photo or perhaps even go swimming or boating in the cool lake surrounded by beautiful mountains.
Konjic
This mountainous and heavily wooded city is located 60 km from Sarajevo and is a spectacular place to stop by if you have the chance. Here you can see a range of things such as the Konjic Bridge, whilst it’s not as beautiful as Mostar bridge it’s still impressive. You can also admire and even hike or ski on the Prenj Mountains which are the most impressive mountain ranges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  There is also Tito’s Bunker you can visit here which was built to to protect Josip Tito and 350 members of his inner circle in the event of an atomic conflict.

Day 5 - Banja Luca

This is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is an aesthetic pleasing city with leafy streets and stunning hills in the background. There is so much you can do here such as: visit the beautiful Kassel fortress on the Vegas river bank or visit the Christ the Saviour Church which is one of the most expensive and most beautiful churches in the region. You could also visit the beautiful 16th century Fermat-Pasha Mosque which was built during the Ottoman period.

Day 6 - Srebrenica

Srebrenica is most famous for the massacre that happened here in July 1995 where over 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were killed during the Bosnian war. A visit here will be incredibly moving but a good experience to learn about the harrowing events whilst also embracing the beautiful, untouched nature of Srebrenica. You should wander around the town and see the abandoned buildings and ruins dotted about the centre as well as paying tribute to the Memorial Centre Potocari where you can hear stories from local survivors and wander around the mass graves.

Day 7 - Back to Sarajevo

If you have followed this itinerary then you will finish your trip in Srebrenica and be heading back to Sarajevo either for a flight out of Bosnia and Herzegovina or to take a train or bus elsewhere. You could get a bus back to Sarajevo for €15 or if your renting a car return the car to the original place.
